Cereals encompass the farmed sector as well as downstream processing into breakfast cereals, pasta, numerous types of noodles and other products.
2002-03 turnover of grain crops was A$4.1 billion, employment was around 10,300. The Australian breakfast market is worth about A$750 million per annum. Cereal manufacturing and baking mix manufacturing had a turnover of A$2.5 billion in 2002-03, of this domestic consumption accounted for A$2.2 billion.
Australia has many advantages in growing cereal crops, and value added processing. We are located in close proximity to lucrative Asian markets, resulting in relatively cheaper shipping costs, we are counter seasonal to the northern hemisphere, have an advanced manufacturing base, and importantly, Australia has a reputation of supplying clean, pest and disease free products.
